“Busa ipadan-ag gayod ang inyong kahayag atubangan sa mga tawo, aron makita nila ang inyong mga maayong buhat ug magdayeg sila sa inyong Amahan nga atua sa langit.”

VIEWS FROM THE BELFRY

By: Brod Romeo Delima

In school we were taught to write the alphabet, and the passion to write did not stop from then on. Everything is writeable, any surface or no surface at all. We even wrote something on the wet cemented road on our way home from school. We inked love letters or even composed poetries to woo girls. We carved the everlasting arrow pierced heart on tree trunks or big branches with our names on it too. Writing is the hand’s translation of the desires of the mind, a tandem endeavor. And putting a heart to it, gives a soul on man’s thoughts.

Cavemen were the original writers of humankind, they wrote on walls. Early civilizations continued this option of expressing their thoughts or writing to pass their culture to the next generations on the walls as well. They are drawing images, writing and scratching anything on the walls or surfaces of public areas, such as buildings, parks, toilets, fences, and even on their skins; some are usually political or sexual in content: a lover’s pledge, a proposition, or obscene words. Tattoo, calligraphy, etching, inscription, graffiti, and hieroglyphics are legacies of the past generations, and mostly those are things of beauty, and surely a joy forever as what John Keats quoted.

“The pen is mightier than the sword” as the adage says, is true. And it is even truer to another kind of writers. The destruction of properties through many means was attributed to the Vandals. Writing on the surface which destroys the beauty and integrity is considered their opus.Vandalism is a disease of every generation.

Most people abhor these common writing on walls, it is ugly and repulsive. It stains our clean and painted world. These writings are sometimes elaborately written as to become eligible. They are not only using pen, they used paints, charcoals, leaves, mud, food, fruits, human excrement, and anything their hands can grab. Ingenuously they literally even used sword as the pen, truly mightiest indeed.

This writing on our walls still continues even today and it conveyed different messages from those of my younger days and of the ancient years. Today’s wall writings mostly edified angst, anger, hatred, vengeance, destruction, and emotions contrary to what God has intended human society to feel.

Messages on the walls are written by the young rebels without cause, most of them doped, expressing mostly their self-inflict tortured and twisted mind, blaming everybody except themselves. There is a very little part of me that likened this writing on walls. We can learn a lot from these writings. When we see and read those, we know that we cannot sleep or go on sleeping, and still be alright. These are signs of time. There is a cry for help. Perhaps deciphering the coded messages is less difficult than addressing those messages. It is a Herculean task.

I am part of this generation, and I will not disavow anything to escape or make an alibi for my innocence. Let us understand their messages on the walls.

Let us communicate to the young minds in any way we can, even if it takes wall as our medium. We can never run out of walls, we created too many of them.

Man will surely continue this writing activity for a very long time. For even God, like us, is a writer;

He wrote on stone tablets with His fingers to remind us that He has rules for our morals;

He wrote on our hearts something called conscience so we can identify good from evil;

He wrote on the wall of King Belshazzar to warn that we are weighed too and we might be found lacking;

He wrote on the sky for Constantine to encourage that we can conquer anything by His sign and in His Name;

He wrote on our souls the day we were baptized and affixed His seal, and known that we are to be His, forever;

And He admonishes us to read the signs of time He has written to remind us that the end, our individual end, is near and so we face the final curtain. Vandals will continue to write our walls disturbing our comfortable lives until the end of time.
